The Winter ’24 Women’s Fashion Edit

By Fashion Sub-Editor Bea Harrison

Winter in Tasmania is cold. Really cold.

With temperatures dipping as low as 3℃ overnight, and occasionally peaking no further than 5℃ during the day, a warm wardrobe is a must. But, despite the ubiquitous Tassie Tuxedo (a black puffer jacket) for which locals are ridiculed, there’s still plenty of opportunities to flex a style muscle throughout the cooler months.

The Winter ‘24 Women’s Fashion Edit covers work, weekend and night out looks,  with many of the items available in Tasmanian shops, and some even designed by local creatives. Warm up and look good doing it.

WORK

  1. Paloma Skirt Made from warm heavyweight cotton denim, this midi skirt can be dressed up or down with a simple change of shoes. Wear it with tights if you feel the cold.

  2. Wool Coat A long black wool coat is a winter wardrobe staple and a good investment. Made from 98% wool, this one is cut in a relaxed style and features understated details. Dress it up for work or use it to cover your comfy weekend tracksuit pants.

  3. RA Sunglasses A cat eye frame in a colour that will match everything. These sunglasses will shade your eyes from Tassie's infamous extreme UV levels thanks to our (generally) clear blue skies.

  4. Zebzag An updated clog made with soft suede, these have a convertible slingback buckle and can be worn with or without socks.

  5. Soft Crescent Bag An irresistible colour that is on-trend this winter, and a practical size for carrying day-to-day essentials.

  6. Oversized Mohair-blend Scarf This oversized scarf adds a soft pop of colour and texture to your outfit, and is big enough to wrap around your body like a cosy blanket.

  7. Motion Tube Hoops Elegant and versatile, you can remove the silver link charm from these earrings for a more minimal look.

  8. Knit Vest In timeless black, this knit vest tucks loves to be tucked into a high-waisted skirt. Gravitate to cashmere wool in winter - it's a natural fibre that's ultra-soft as well as warm.

Weekend

  1. Tessa Jacket Lightweight, slouchy and snuggly, this jacket is mad from a soft quilted cotton jersey.

  2. Mason Linen Long Sleeve This oversized long sleeve shirt, made from 100% linen, will go with everything and can be worn all year round.

  3. Positive Outcomes Cap Always carry a sun-smart hat and a warm-me-up beanie because you'll need both in one day.

  4. Plum Boucle Knit Jumper A boucle knit that is cosy and textured.

  5. Agna Beanie From Australian ethical label ELK, this beanie is a good mix of warm winter fibres including alpaca and merino wool. The olive green plays well with neutral tones and this winter's palette of plums and burgundies.

  6. Wide Leg Jean Everybody needs a pair of jeans they feel good in. This wide leg style comes in a dark blue denim, too.

  7. Humphrey Law Alpaca Socks These New Zealand possum fur and merino lambswool socks are like a hug for your feet.

  8. Round Neck Top A long sleeve made of superfine merino wool, perfect for layering under everything and keeping your kidneys warm.

  9. Chelsea Boots Almost as iconic to Tasmania as Mona, these unisex boots in rustic brown leather need no introduction. Just get them (if you don't own them already).

  10. Nylon Shoulder Bag Made from recycled heavyweight nylon, the Baggu brand has a reputation for making lightweight, fits-a-lot bags.

Night Out

  1. Florentine Cocoon Coat A luxurious investment piece, this coat manages to be warm and lightweight, due to its wool and cashmere blend. Stylish yet understated, with a relaxed cocoon-like shape, it's perfect for many Tasmanian winters to come.

  2. Golden Retro Stripe Knit Skirt Made from a lightweight cotton, this skirt can be layered under mini dresses, or worn alone on those warmer-than-average Tassie nights.

  3. Australian Cotton Blend Ribbed Quarter Crew Socks These cotton socks have a rib finish and are the perfect crew length to wear under boots.

  4. Oval Mini Bag In a beautiful shape and colour, this bag will elevate an after-dark look.

  5. Bua Loafer Boot With their minimalist styling, these boots can be worn year-round to all occasions, making them a very good investment. Wear with a quarter crew sock to keep your toes toasty.

  6. Heart Hoops These heart hoops have a vintage inspired feel and will complete your evening look.

  7. Wool Mini Dress This versatile wool cashmere mini dress can be worn over a skirt, jeans, pants or tights for added layers.

  8. Merino & Possum Gloves Hand-warmers for those late winter nights when coat pockets aren't enough, or an early morning at Farm Gate Market when the coffee queue is long and the wind picks up.
