The Spring School Holiday Guide - Hobart

By Amanda Vallis

Spring weather is unpredictable in Tasmania, so every parent needs a black book of indoor activities to keep the kids busy. Here are our go-to’s.

BOUNCE

Taking the kids to BOUNCE is like releasing a pack of puppies into a room full of squeaky toys! This indoor trampoline park is a paradise of bouncing, flipping, and all-around chaos. My kids leap around with joy, and even I can’t go past a jump around for a bit of an endorphin boost (it’s impossible not to smile on a trampoline). Plus, there’s a section for younger kids, so everyone can join in.

ROCK IT CLIMBING

An indoor rock climbing gym where my kids can channel their inner mountain goats, Hobart’s Rock It is our go-to for a school holiday run-around. The staff are all super friendly, and the walls cater to all levels, which means the kids can challenge themselves without me worrying about broken bones. The tunnels provide hours of endless entertainment, and you can even kick back with a beer or cider while the kids explore.

HOBART LIBRARY

We love heading to the library during the school holidays! They have awesome programs like storytime and crafts, and my kids adore agonising over which books they want to take home. The best bit is that the entertainment continues into the afternoon as the kids continue to admire and flick through their new reads.

TMAG

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery’s (TMAG) children’s gallery,  mapiya lumi - palawa kani for "around here” - is aimed at kids aged 0-7. An inquisitive space for busy little brains, the offering encourages them to touch, play and explore with interactive puzzles, story circles, animal discovery areas, and a climbing area culminating in a big slide.

HOT CHOCOLATE AT FERN TREE TAVERN

Even on rainy days, we’ll often don our puffers and brave the Silver Falls Loop, a short walk that begins just outside Fern Tree Tavern and heads up a fern-lined path to a waterfall. The kids are convinced that the path is inhabited by fairies, and we can spend hours meandering the path trying to spot them. The ultimate reward is a hot chocolate by at fire at the tavern.

FAERIE LAND

Faerie Land in Richmond is a whimsical wonderland for your faerie-loving offspring! Keep an eye on the website and social media for school holiday workshops like wand- and potion-making, or pop in for an explore followed by the best scones with jam and clotted cream at Czegs’ Café.
