History, Mystery & Romance: Hobart’s Lumière Lodge

A Victorian-era home has been lovingly restored to its 1890s glory, seamlessly integrating contemporary touches to create a luxury stay that feels like home.

Nestled in the foothills of West Hobart, the neat weatherboard facade of Lumière Lodge belies the grandeur lingering behind its front door. Thoughtfully styled with antique oil paintings, floral arrangements and little curiosities, the three-bedroom cottage hides small luxuries in every one of its many corners. Though the homestead is only a short walk to Hobart’s CBD, its curated spaces create a rare sense of intimacy and solitude against an expansive footprint.

Owners Kerran and Sam made good on their love affair with this little slice of Old Hobart Town when they purchased the home in 2015. Five years of devoted restoration later, Lumière Lodge began its next chapter as a self-contained stay destination for visitors to Tasmania. Sleeping up to six, it’s no easy task to select a place to lay your head. A king bed looks out to ivied exteriors through a restored King Billy Pine church window, and two queen rooms vie for attention with their unique appeal - one is at ground level, and the other is accessed by a narrow heritage staircase to an original attic space.

Each bedroom is made up with quality linen sheets, and claims its own bathroom, where claw-foot baths, handmade Moroccan tiles and stained-glass windows behoove guests to indulge in warm water soaks and steam therapy.

Two additional rooms - the home’s “snugs” - are moody spaces in which to stoke a fire and decant a bottle of Tasmania wine from the cellar.

Though excellent nearby eateries beckon, guests might be enticed to stay tucked away in the warm embrace of the lodge, complete as it is with a fully-equipped kitchen, including a Thermomix, chef’s knives, induction stovetop, and full steam oven.  For those who wish to make use of the kitchen more passively, Lumière Lodge offers bespoke in-house dining experiences by celebrated local chef Lilly Trewartha. Having worked all over the world and in Tasmania, Lilly brings her deep appreciation for seasonal produce to ever-changing menus that highlight some of the island’s best morsels.

The open-plan living area also features a bakers oven and wood burner, and a custom-made dining table for cosy feasts. There’s little need to fire up the appliances if simplicity is more your style, though - a stay at Lumière Lodge comes complete with complimentary seasonal cocktails and delicious local produce that has been curated with lazy grazing in mind. Gourmet breakfast provisions from nearby favourites are also on hand for slow mornings on one of the home’s many inviting lounges, or its leafy courtyard.

While the decadence of a bygone era pervades every nook of this original homestead, Lumière Lodge has been generously transformed into a modern take on truly luxury Hobart accommodation.
